The supervisor of Jadid Cemetery at Delhi Gate told that, due to corona infection, the way of burial of the dead has also changed. The dead do not even touch their own hands

38-year-old Supervisor of Jadid Cemetery, Md. Shamim said in a conversation with the English newspaper Hindustan Times that Corona has made a condition that after death, he is taking his own edge. Even if someone’s father died, the deceased’s son is afraid to touch the dead body in the cemetery.

Shamim said in a conversation with the newspaper that his three generations are involved in the work of burying the dead bodies, but it was never seen that even the relatives of the deceased appear to be shy of touching the dead bodies. However, he said that many such cases have also come up in which people in the neighborhood of the deceased have come to bury the dead in the graveyard instead of their relatives.

Burying the COVID-19 infected challenge

After the death of the corona virus infected patients, extra care is being taken to bury them. Md. Shamim said that 26 bodies were buried in the Jadid cemetery by Saturday evening. He told that it is challenging to bury the corona infected patient. He told that this work is not only dangerous, but there are also many challenges. Shamim said that the corpses are usually brought for burial only after noon, but 2 hours before that, the relatives of the deceased come to us and take full information about the process of burial. I tell them all the precautions to be taken regarding infection. People are told to bring PPE suits, gloves, masks, sanitizers along with them to bury the dead body.

JCB used to dig the grave

Md. Shamim said that special preparations are made to bury his corpse after the death of a corona-infected patient as compared to normal days. In a conversation with the newspaper, he said, ‘In normal days, we have grave diggers here to bury someone’s body, who digs a grave about 3 feet deep. But after the death of COVID-19 infected, we use earth-moving machines like JCB to bury it, from which a 10 feet deep grave is excavated.

On normal days, the dead body is removed by their relatives in the tomb. But in view of the risk of corona infection, these days a rope is being used to take the body to the grave. Shamim said that according to Islamic tradition, his family members are allowed to see the face and read the fatiha before burial, but this has changed these days.
